At Seed Connect Africa Conference, Reps Deputy Speaker Highlights Nigeria’s contribution to West Africa

Deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 declared open the 6^th Edition of Seed Connect Africa Conference & Exhibition 2023.

Put together by the National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC) and partners for their unwavering commitment to the growth and development of Nigeria’s seed industry.

According to the Deputy Speaker, Nigeria’s crucial role in improving food security in the continent is significant, as its seed sector accounts for about 157 registered companies, the highest in terms of production and export across West Africa.

Referencing the passage of the plant variety protection (PVP) Act which stands as a landmark achievement in strengthening Nigeria’s seed industry, he hinted that the Green Chamber will make efforts to support policies aimed at driving agricultural growth towards ending food insecurity in our country.

Worthy of note is the fact that the PVP Act 2021 provides legal protection for plant breeders, supporting innovation and investment in seed development and ultimately revolutionizing the seed sector, leading to increased productivity, improved seed quality, and enhanced access for farmers.
