The House of Representatives has issued a clarification on reports relating to its alleged position on the removal of tertiary institutions from Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
This is as contained in a statement issued on Sunday, by Rep. Abubakar Hassan Fulata, Chairman of the House Committee on University Education.
According to various media reports, Rep. Fulata while speaking at the 3rd International Conference of the Gender Policy Unit, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria on Wednesday, was said to have expressed the House’s commitment to remove tertiary institutions from the IPPIS.
The lawmaker has thus clarified that he expressed his personal opinion on the IPPIS subject, while restating his determination to work with other members to improve the welfare of teachers in the country’s tertiary institutions through additional budgetary allocations.
“I want to make it categorically clear that I spoke in my personal capacity as a member of the House of Representatives. Therefore, my opinion on IPPIS remains mine and not that of the Speaker or any other member of the House for that matter,” part of the statement read.
“However, and unfortunately so, the media attributed my opinion on the need to remove tertiary institutions from IPPIS to the Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D.,” Rep. Fulata added.
He further pledged to work with his colleagues to ensure that education receives a substantial portion of the national budget to meet the United Nations requirement of 26 percent of the national budget.
“Let the media be guided and always attribute comments to appropriate sources,” the lawmaker noted.
