- Calls for Robust Engagement in Constitution Review Process

As the world marks International Women's Day, the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria joins in celebrating the invaluable contributions of women to our nation's progress and development.

This day serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of gender equality and the empowerment of women in all spheres of life.

The 10th Assembly of the House of Representatives is steadfast in its commitment to advancing the rights of women and promoting policies that enhance their well-being. Our Legislative Agenda includes measures aimed at addressing gender-based violence, promoting women's participation in politics and decision-making, and ensuring equal opportunities for women in education, employment, and healthcare.

In reaffirming our commitment to the principles of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which advocate for the full and equal participation of women in all aspects of life, we call on all stakeholders to join us in creating a society where women and girls can thrive, free from discrimination and violence.

The theme for International Women's Day 2024, "Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress," resonates deeply with the House of Representatives. We recognise that investing in women is not only a moral imperative but also a smart economic decision. Empowering women and girls is key to accelerating progress towards gender equality and sustainable development.

Furthermore, the House of Representatives encourages robust engagement from stakeholders in the ongoing constitution review process. This process seeks to, amongst other objectives, address key issues in the constitution that undermine women's rights and aims to ensure that our laws reflect the principles of gender equality and women's empowerment.

On this International Women's Day, let us recommit ourselves to working towards a more inclusive and equitable society for all. Together, we can build a world where every woman and girl has the opportunity to fulfill her potential and contribute to the advancement of our nation.

Jointly Signed:

Rep. Kafilat Ogbara
Chairperson, House Committee on Women Affairs

Rep. Fatima Talba
Chairperson, House Committee on Women in Parliament
