The House of Representatives celebrates with the Management and Staff of Punch Newspapers on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, which carries special significance as it coincides with the 40th Anniversary of the demise of the founder, Chief Olu Aboderin.

As a distinguished member of the fourth estate of the realm, Punch Newspapers has played a pivotal role in promoting democracy and development in Nigeria.
Founded in 1974 by the Late Chief Aboderin, the newspaper has remained steadfast in its commitment to journalistic excellence and upholding the principles of press freedom and democracy.

Over the past five decades, Punch has also been a strong voice for the voiceless, holding government officials accountable and advocating for good governance. The House celebrates this legacy and honours the memory of its founder, Chief Olu Aboderin.

We also congratulate the Chairperson of the Board, Madam Angela Emuwa, Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Adeyeye Joseph, as well as successive members of the board, management and staff for their dedication and resilience in keeping the newspaper titles alive.
This unwavering commitment to journalistic integrity and the pursuit of truth has earned Punch Newspapers; a well-deserved reputation as one of Nigeria's most respected media houses.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, lauds Punch Newspapers for its role in advancing press freedom and democracy in Nigeria. He also recalls instances as during the military era
where the newspaper stood up for press freedom, boldly speaking truth to power and defending the right of the press to operate freely.

"The Punch newspaper has been a beacon of light in the Nigerian media landscape, championing the cause of press freedom and democracy. We salute the Punch newspaper on its 50th anniversary and wish it many more years of success," Speaker Abbas said.

In line with the Legislative Agenda of the 10th Assembly of the House of Representatives, we remain committed to deepening engagement with the media and the public. We also affirm our commitment to take necessary legislative action that promotes a free press which does not impugn on the rights of Nigerians.
