The House of Representatives felicitates Nigeria’s children on the occasion of this year’s National Children’s Day.

On this day celebrating our nation’s greatest assets, we are reminded as individuals, institutions, and organisations of the need to promote their well being and protect their rights as outlined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

As we celebrate this year, there is an increasing need for all stakeholders to collectively raise awareness on issues that affect access to quality education for our children, in appreciating that they are the future of society.

The 10th House of Representatives is encouraging measures through legislation, oversight and outreach to ensure the full achievement of Universal Basic Education, Almajiri education and Technical education in Nigeria, in alignment with our Legislative Agenda. We are also making efforts to revisit the proposal that the constitutional provision of education be made a fundamental right.

Similarly, we call on our counterparts at the sub-national level to work with governments to ensure effective implementation of the Child Rights Act in their states, and the domestication of the law in states where the same is yet to be achieved.

Where necessary, legislation that will ensure improved infrastructure of learning institutions and teacher quality, as well as foster digital learning and technical education in Nigeria’s educational system would be enacted. The 10th House of Representatives is cognisant of the fact that reforming and modernising the technical education system is pivotal for equipping students with the skills required to thrive in the modern era and contribute effectively to Nigeria’s economic growth.

As parents, guardians and caregivers, let us continue to encourage creativity in children to express themselves through activities that celebrate their talents and voices.

We honour every Nigerian child and we wish them a fruitful celebration.

Signed:
Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr.
House Spokesman / Chairman, House Committee on Media & Public Affairs
